Surveys the emergence of U.S. media from a social and cultural perspective. Analyzes the development of media in the United States in the twentieth century in terms of debates about nationality, class, race, and gender, as well as industry practices. Readings address a range of media technology including radio, television, and the early development of the Internet. Prereq. (a) MSCR1220 or permission of instructor and (b) sophomore standing or above.
